5 Lessons To Live Your Best Life

Happy Monday!

This exact time last year I was on edge.

We had the loose plan of driving down to Florida the day after Christmas and were trying to completely move out of our condo, figure out how to pack everything we “needed” in my Honda Accord, and still be present to enjoy the last few days in CT with our families for the holidays.

When we left early that cold morning after Christmas, I remember thinking the exact same thing I thought of when I was driving home from UMASS after graduating:  I have no idea what’s going to happen or how it’s going to play out, but we’ll figure it out.

This sounds like the right thing to say or think. Yet we’re not programmed to think this way. Our default is to resist change and be fearful of the unknown. Optimism isn’t something we naturally gravitate towards—it has to be developed.

Optimism comes from confidence; something I lacked most of my childhood into my adolescence and something I’ve been working on ever since.

Part of my struggle with confidence was that I was constantly bullied. I believed the negative names I was called, which made me second-guess everything and caused me to shy away, stutter, and over-think everything from a conversation with a peer to a question on a test.

Looking back, the biggest thing that changed was the simple shift in my mind; from worrying what they would say and thinking the worst to just following my gut and focusing on what I could control.

Focusing on what you can control is a practice similar to sharpening a sword where the more heat (friction or challenge) you expose to the sword (or yourself), the more effective the sword (or you) become.

Sometimes we get too caught up in wanting to control all the factors and spend too much time planning…the ole “paralysis by analysis” where no progress gets made and we’re left frustrated.

I had no intention of opening a gym in Year One of our move, let alone the idea of IN30. But it became clear early on after our move that I had a void. I missed coaching and having a community I could connect with daily, in person. From there I started to explore different concepts that have been circulating through my mind over the year; from learning the area and comparing different options of available space to crystalizing the concept and coming up with the right name & brand.  And this was just one of many aspects that have played out over the past year. Getting engaged was an incredible thing by itself!

From this reflection I’ve derived 5 lessons to help you as we move into the New Year; lessons to help you live your best life:

  1. The real threat is not the challenge or change ahead, it’s staying still.
  2. No matter how much you plan, it’s impossible to know exactly what will happen.
  3. All you really can control is what thoughts you allow to occupy your mind and what actions you take.
  4. There is no right or wrong answer. There’s only what you feel is the best decision at the time, given the information available to you and how you react to whatever happens.
  5. The only path to growth is through uncertainty and discomfort.

Now it’s your turn.

What’s on your mind right now that is putting you on edge? What’s making you nervous because it’s something you want but you’re not sure how to achieve it or don’t think you have what it takes to achieve?

This January I’m excited to offer a 30-day challenge unlike anything we’ve ever done before, designed to help start the New Year on FIRE and even giving you the opportunity to win $500 by sharing your progress over the 30 days.

Right now we’re giving away 4 entries into the challenge and we’re going to announce the winners 12/26 – all you have to do is take 30 seconds to enter to win! Once you enter to win, you’ll get a special link for which, when you share, you’ll get additional entries from everyone who enters through your link!

At this point, there’s no reason why you can’t—just excuses why you won’t. LETS DO THIS!
