You People :)

Happy Monday!

I’ve been thinking a lot about people lately; my family, my team, our clients, and so on.  I think we as humans are underrated. Most people are really good.

It’s easy to get caught up in all the negative stuff that’s going on in the world. Negative news is blared all over the broadcast media much more often than positive good news. And social media is only exposing what was always there. It’s not that we have regressed as humans, it’s just that now we all have our own convenient soapboxes. And every time we hop on them and rant, we expose who we REALLY are. There’s no more hiding.

Please don’t get me wrong, I am no Mother Teresa – some people annoy the crap out of me. BUT many times it’s not them…it’s me.

What annoys us and makes us angry is a direct reflection on who we are inside, and what our values are. On a very superficial level, it feels good for us to call out whatever wrongs we perceive, minimize the other person, and hop onto a pedestal. But sometimes, we’re only noticing other’s faults because we share that behavior in some way of our own. It’s not always the case, but often enough it is, if we are honest. And seeing that shared behavior displayed by someone else is usually downright irritating.

But our perception and reality are not always the same.

People don’t mess up because they want to, everyone acts in their own highest values and does their best with what they have. Why we get mad is because their values, whether overall or in regards to specific situations don’t align with ours—so we think they’re wrong.

So is my message to you to never get mad at anyone? Heck no! That’s just not realistic.

Rather, my message to you is to be more aware that at the root of every action, people almost always have good intentions. People usually act in accordance to their own values—which may be different from yours.
