When Disaster Strikes

Happy Monday!

One of my mentors, Paul Reddick, shared an analogy that really resonated with me.

I was dealing with some hard “stuff” and Paul likened the process to the three steps people go through when an earthquake strikes.

Step 1:  Survive

When a natural disaster hits, the most important thing you need to do is put yourself in a situation to survive, as nothing else matters. In life, we often account for and attempt to tackle all things at once and end up in worse shape because nothing gets accomplished.

Step 2:  Assess the Damage

Before you can make progress, you need to pinpoint the extent of the issues you’re dealing with. We have a tendency to write the worst case story in our head of what actually happened. Nine times out of ten what’s in our heads is far worse than reality.

In most weight loss transformations, people will often attempt to skip this step but what ends up happening is they are able to accomplish the physical challenge of working out; yet we typically look past the real emotional/mental issues at hand so no matter what “gains” you make, without the right assessment you’ll never be able to achieve lasting results.

The key here is to be as objective as possible – what is the problem at hand? What are we actually working with?

Step 3:  Rebuild

As you know, Rome wasn’t built in a day. In any sort of construction, your progress is often limited to the resources you have available but the process is clear, albeit hampered by impediments.

Hopefully Step 3 is where we will spend most our time. Mental/emotional/spiritual self development is much like physical training in that it’s never over. There will never be a point at which you don’t need to work on yourself or train. So the most important element here to shift your mindset away from an outcome—which is a temporary event—towards the process, which endures a lifetime.

The best question here is – what’s the next best thing you can do today to progress forward?

Remember, we all have our own “stuff” and sometimes it can feel like the world is caving in on us. Know in those moments that you have a surefire recovery plan for when disaster does hit.

As we always like to say here, the focus should be on progress NOT perfection.
