To illustrate the lies of consumerism

Happy Monday!

Consumerism and social media lie to us.  Despite what we see and hear daily, we are NOT in need and are NOT lacking.  Most of us are fortunate to have our basic needs covered in abundance:

  • Air to breath
  • Water to drink
  • Food to eat
  • Shelter for oneself and family
  • Love for oneself and others
  • Community and a tribe to contribute to
  • Awareness that WE are enough

The level of our own suffering is directly correlated with our inability to recognize & appreciate that our basic needs are already met.

It’s OKAY to want more and to aim high. But we must remember that anything beyond what we actually need to function is not a necessity, and we can live without it.

It’s hard to recognize this when consumerism and social media constantly hammer us and make us feel a strong sense of desire. But if we look deep enough, we will find that one of two things is at play:

A.  We are complete. We are just not aware that we already have everything we truly need.

B.  One of our basic needs is actually not fulfilled. As we move further into the digital age, we are becoming less connected with each other and with our own selves. So we most often look outward for answers as fear, anxiety and feelings of depression creep in.

The universe will only reward us with more when we are able to appreciate what we already have.

Next time you find yourself feeling inadequate, look inward and reflect on these basic needs. Take a deep dive into yourself to objectively look at what’s really going on.
