How To Set Goals That Become Reality

(Today I am taking the opportunity to feature one of my favorite posts from the early days of m.e.l.t. While this post is not new, I hope you find that the message still resonates and is of value. Enjoy!  JC)

How do you set goals that become reality?

If you don’t have a plan, your goal is really nothing more than a wish. It’s not enough to dream it & want it–you gotta plan it & work it!

My friend Tom Terwilliger–athlete, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker–has an amazing goal setting system that I think will resonate with you. It’s called A.C.T.I.O.N. and it’s a way to set goals and then track and hit those goals.

Whether your goal is to start a regular training program like m.e.l.t. or In30FIT, lose 20 lbs, or be able to keep up with your kids/grandkids; get your dreams and wishes OUT of your head and into this A.C.T.I.O.N. format:

The A.C.T.I.O.N. Goal Setting System

(A)ttainable: Set a goal that is within reach!

A goal is not a fantasy. So if it’s July and you have 50 lbs to lose, don’t wish for six pack abs by August!  A goal must be realistic!  Better goals would be losing 6 inches off your waist/hips by September or dropping 20 lbs by October.

(C)lear & (C)oncise: The more detail you provide, the better results you’ll see and the quicker you’ll get there.

Think of programming a GPS to drive to California from Connecticut. You know you want to go to California and you know that you need to go west but unless you program in an exact destination, you’ll never get there.

(T)ime & (T)owards: If you don’t schedule it you can’t achieve it.

When do you want to reach your goal? And what will you do in order to reach your goal by that date? Set a realistic time frame and then write your goals for each day on a calendar. Do you want to do at least 30 min of exercise (like at m.e.l.t. or In30FIT) 6 days/week? Do yoga 3 days/week? Drink .55 oz of water times your bodyweight each day? Document your daily steps so you have a clear path to reaching your goal.

(I)n Passion: Your goal has to be something that resonates deeply inside you, to lift you up when you feel down.

Whatever your goal is I can tell you one thing for sure; it will take consistent, hard work to achieve it. You will hit speed bumps, you will question yourself and feel like quitting. You have to have the passion in order to keep putting one foot in front of the other!

(O)rganic: Your goal must come naturally and must connect to what you value.

If there’s no congruence between your goal and your values, there will too much resistance stacked against your achieving success. Remember, all great things in life come with a cost.  As Tom says, if your goal is not within your values, you have two choices:

  1. Change your goals, OR
  2. Change your beliefs

(N)ow: This is my favorite part. Get started NOW!

There will never be a “perfect” time for you to get started. The longer you wait, the harder it will be – trust me. Progress breeds progress, take that first step and you will be on your way!

I am 100% confident that if you follow this A.C.T.I.O.N. plan in writing out your goal, there is NOTHING you can’t do.

Don’t ever forget, You are the greatest miracle in the world. The only force that can stop you, is you.

Get out of your own way and get started NOW.

LET’S GO!!!
